Peaceful Bend Wine Hurricane, 2 ways

Laissez les bons temps rouler!  Happy Mardi Gras everyone!

So perhaps you are like me and have to work tomorrow, thus not able to join in whole-heartedly with the state holiday of Louisiana?  I created a fast and easy wine hurricane for you to mix up tonight and create a lower-key celebration tonight.  It’s lighter in sweetness and alcohol than the original hurricane.  So you can let the good times roll tonight, and still wake up ready to face the day tomorrow!

And this actually makes a great late-winter/early spring wine cocktail since the citrus fruits are starting to shine at the grocery stores again.  Here you go….

1/2 cup chilled Concord or Sweet River White wine

1 Tablespoon lime juice (or squeeze the juice from 1/2 of a fresh lime)

1 Tablespoon orange juice (freshly squeezed or poured from a box, either way!)

1/4 cup peach mango juice OR BETTER YET go the traditional route and use passion fruit juice (see note at end)

1/2 slice of orange for garnish

Add the wine and all the juices to the wine glass and mix.  Taste and if the drink is too tart, add more peach mango juice to your preferred level of sweetness.

Some notes: A traditional hurricane uses passion fruit juice, not peach mango.  Our local grocery store doesn’t not carry passion fruit juice though, so I did the best I could and used the peach mango juice.  Feel free to substitute.

Also, a hurricane should probably also have grenadine in it, but since I don’t have any of that either, I tried a version of this with the Concord wine to give it the red color.  While I liked the Concord version o.k.,  I honestly liked the Sweet River White version much better.

This isn’t the real thing of course, but for something fast, easy, and fun I think it makes a great little wine cocktail.  Hope you enjoy it and have fun celebrating Mardi Gras today.  Cheers!
