Clyde Gill
Clyde Gill was born in Patuxent River, MD in 1959, the youngest of three brothers. After an early childhood of moving state to state with his career naval father & mother, Clyde settled near Wentzville, Missouri for his high school years. After graduating, Clyde moved around the U.S. more, and eventually found himself out in Carmel, California in the early 1980’s. It was at that time that he developed an interest in wine and began working as harvest & crush help at various wineries in the northern CA region.
In 1985 Clyde moved back to Missouri to be closer to family. At the time, working in a winery was not a possibility due to his young family, so he worked in the plastics industry in St. Louis for a few years. After his divorce in 1989, Clyde searched out a job in the wine industry and found a position open for an entry-level cellar master at Stone Hill Winery. Three years later, he was the head cellar master, and began dreaming of owning his own winery one day.
This dream became a reality after meeting his wife, Katie Nott, who also worked for Stone Hill. The two found an existing winery for sale – Peaceful Bend Vineyard – in 1998 and jumped in with both feet.
These days Clyde serves as the head winemaker, cellar master, chief repair manager, computer specialist, and lawn mower operator. Contact email: Clyde@peacefulbend.com
Katie Nott
Katie was born in Lansing MI in 1974. Her agriculture professor father and her English major mother installed in her a love of growing plants and of reading. Growing up near Michigan State University, Katie was exposed to many aspects of agriculture and research.
Thus, by the time she graduated from high school, Katie was ready to go into Marine Biology. After two years at the University of Rhode Island, Katie discovered that not only did she truly enjoy Botany and Horticulture, but that she also experienced extreme sea sickness. So she packed her bags and headed back to Lansing to finish her bachelor’s degree in Horticulture at Michigan State University.
An internship at Stone Hill Winery in Hermann Missouri was quickly followed by an offer to be the winery’s vineyard manager in 1996. During her first week on the job, Katie met the cellar master for Stone Hill – Clyde Gill – and it was love at first joke.
Two years after accepting the position of vineyard manager, Katie & Clyde found Peaceful Bend Vineyard for sale and decided to go into business for themselves. So in June of 1998, the couple gave notice to Stone Hill and moved to Steelville Missouri to take over at Peaceful Bend.
Currently, Katie oversees the tasting room, event coordination, marketing, and housekeeping.
Julie Gill
Julie was born in 1985 in Carmel California but was moved a few months later to Missouri where she has spent the majority of her 25 years. After finishing high school in St. Louis, Julie went on to college in Springfield Missouri in order to absorb and regurgitate more information. Four major-switches and four and a half years later, the nice people at Missouri State University handed Julie a piece of paper that told her what a good regurgitater she’d been.
“Here Julie,” they said. “Take this piece of paper and show it to some people and they’ll let you do things for them every day in exchange for moneys so you can survive.”
“No thank you,” Julie said, and decided to drive around the country for a few months instead. A semester on the road taught Julie much more than any semester of school.
After all of that driving, Julie figured out that she needed to be just a few miles from where she started. She has been living and working at Peaceful Bend since December of 2008. Julie is responsible [most of the time] for the wholesale and distribution of Peaceful Bend wine.
Winery Pets
We currently house two dogs and two cats. All four are valuable greeters at the winery and do their best to keep guests from eating too much cheese and sausage.
