Wine Cocktail: Cucumber Ginger

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!  I hope you can enjoy a delicious Mexican dinner tonight.  Maybe a taco or two alongside a glass of one of our Sangrias ( Click this link for two recipes).  I’m putting on a wine class this evening, so I probably won’t be enjoying any myself due to the drive, so be sure to have one for me! 🙂

Cucumber Ginger Wine Cocktail 2
Although I’m not doing much for Cinco de Mayo, I am thinking ahead to Mother’s Day this coming Sunday.  I thought it would be fun to come up with a few wine cocktails that you can easily put together for a nice Mother’s Day brunch.  It’s been quite a while since my last go at a wine cocktail and I had a great time coming up with a few new recipes!  And while I call these wine cocktails, I think they are probably more like wine ‘spritzers’ since I used carbonated sodas to mix with the wine.  I’m posting the first recipe today, and then I’ll add another recipe tomorrow and the final recipe on Wednesday.  I hope you find all these cocktail/spritzers as fun (and delicious) as I did!

Cucumber Ginger Wine Cocktail 3
This first recipe is lightly sweet and really refreshing.  Clyde and I are huge fans of craft ginger ale, so I wanted to see if it would combine with the wine.  As luck would have it, Bundaburg Ginger Beer turned out to be the perfect compliment for cucumbers and our dry white Courtois.  We carry this ginger beer (non-alcoholic) in the tasting room, so if you are interested in making this cocktail, be sure to pick up a bottle or two when you come by.

I tested this with several customers yesterday, and got thumbs up from everyone.  Plus, this just couldn’t be any easier to make, leaving you plenty of time to visit with your Mom!

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup chilled Courtois
  • 1/8 cup chilled Ginger Ale (a craft ginger ale or ginger beer is best)
  • 1 thin slice of cucumber

Directions:

  1. Place cucumber slice in the bottom of a glass.
  2. Pour the wine and the ginger ale over.  Stir and serve.

This recipe makes one serving, but feel free to increase your quantities according to how many you need to serve.  And you’ll be surprised at how little cucumber you need for the flavor to come through – one slice worked well even for a double batch in one glass.

And just in case you were wondering, we will be open from 11am-6pm on Sunday, so why not pack up a picnic and bring Mom on out to the winery for the afternoon?!  Cheers!
